USB Type-C: One Cable to Connect Them All

(Hsin-Chu, Taiwan) Etron Technology, Inc. (Taiwan GTSM: 5351) unveils its latest USB Type-C Switch IC: the EJ179. The EJ179 can route USB 3.1 / USB 3.0 / USB 2.0 signal pairs, support the slim, reversible USB Type-C cable and connector, and is also capable of speeds up to 10 Gbps. The EJ179 is the first USB Type-C Switch IC on the market that can support such speeds and it will contribute to the adoption of the USB Type-C specification.
Consumers often have to check which way is the correct way to insert a USB connector into a USB receptacle. To solve this problem, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group defined the USB Type-C specification in August 2014. As more system manufacturers adopt the USB Type-C specification, it will become the de facto I/O standard throughout the industry.
Etron’s latest USB Type-C Switch IC, the EJ179, supports control signals for external power switches, allowing the reversible plug to work either right-side up or upside-down. As CC logic is integrated, the EJ179 reduces the number of components and PCB space occupied while meeting the USB Type-C specification requirements.
Etron’s EJ179 enables unprecedented speeds of 10 Gbps, supporting rapid transmission of data, files, audio and video. The EJ179 enables higher voltage and current, capable of supplying 3A at 5V, or 15W of power. The EJ179’s power and communication features will allow low-power-consumption devices such as phones to be powered via USB.
