Advances in human-machine interfaces is revolutionizing the ways that people interact with machines. At this year’s COMPUTREND Pavilion at Computex Taipei 2013, Etron Technology, Inc. (Taiwan GTSM: 5351) unveils its latest 3D Depth-Map Camera Controller – eSP870 – and its cutting-edge 3D Depth-Map Sensing Platform – Eagle Eyes. Complete with a USB3.0 interface, built-in Depth-Map Engine (DME), and real-time High Speed HD720P 3D video capture support, Etron’s eSP870 and Eagle Eyes Platforms enable intensive data computation and immediate post-sensing. They also provide synchronized dual HD video/image capture through a USB3.0 (uncompressed) or USB2.0 (compressed) interface, as well as a MIPI (uncompressed) interface. Uniquely low cost and low power, the Eagle Eyes Platform has a small form factor and is as a cost-effective solution for gesture recognition. Etron 3D Depth-Map Camera Controller – eSP870
Normally, the data size of captured images is too large to be managed by motherboard CPUs. Etron’s eSP870 is ideal for running intensive depth-map computing algorithms on the controller itself, thus reserving critical CPU resources for other uses. Etron’s eSP870, while connected to two sensors using either parallel or MIPI interfaces, executes sophisticated parallel computational algorithms, and outputs high performance depth-map images up to VGA resolution at 60 frames per second. With the USB3.0 interface, eSP870 delivers high-performance depth-map images in 3D or 2D instant video and simultaneously enables 3D Gesture / Skeleton recognition of both hand and full body tracking controls.
The eSP870 chip simultaneously controls the timing and image quality of two horizontally placed HD cameras to mimic the function of human eyes in capturing 3D images or videos. It features a patented timing control mechanism to synchronize the left and the right images at up to 30 frames per second. In addition, it automatically aligns both left and right images in the x and y directions to compensate for unavoidable manufacturing discrepancies between the dual cameras on the left and right sides. The unique synchronization and self-aligning features in this eSP870 chip ensure the stellar quality of 3D images/videos and minimizes the flickering and blurring noise effects commonly seen in previous 3D image/video capturing systems.
3D Depth-Map Sensing Platform – Eagle Eyes (EE)
Etron’s EE 3D Depth-Map Sensing Platform has a built in eSP870 controller and comes equipped with two HD 720P (1280×720) CMOS image sensors. Once the scene is shot by Etron’s EE platform, the depth map is generated by the eSP870, which then outputs the flexible and programmable depth-map image. The depth-map image is then transmitted to the host through a USB3.0 interface for advanced recognition. The EE platform is uniquely low cost, low power, and achieves small form factors. It works smoothly with X86-based systems and ARM-based systems. This breakthrough technology enables system developers and manufacturers to build a wide range of next-generation applications in smartphones, tablets, game consoles, personal computers, notebooks, TVs, and other emerging settings.
